Poor Man’s DIY Projects: Building Garage Cabinets for Beginners

We have extremely limited space in our garage so we built some garage cabinets but we used inexpensive plywood and wish to show you that even beginners can build their own custom cabinets with little to no experience

Poor Man's DIY - September 8, 2019

As always, we did not provide measurements but instead, we just wanted to show how inexperienced people can also build a basic cabinet without previous experience. Let us know if we are on target or not.

I recognise that technique of holding the glue covered finger out of the way whilst putting boards together. Lol.

    Poor Man's DIY - September 8, 2019

LOL! I had a feeling I wasn’t the only one. Thank you for the fun comment. We enjoy when people have playful fun with our videos.

Those cabinets turned out rather nice. Love the color contrasts. Richard. Please do not wear gloves when using the table saw or any power saw or drill. Your sense of feel is reduced and they create a false sense of security.

    Poor Man's DIY - September 8, 2019

Thank you so very much, sir! Especially for yout advice about the gloves. I never wear gloves but I purchased cheap plywood this time and was constantly stuck with large splinters. I did keep my hands wide apart for the vary reason you mention. Again I really do appreciate your pointing it out none-the-less!!!

Simple Woodworking - September 8, 2019

Really well done guys! I can see you are improving so much!

    Poor Man's DIY - September 8, 2019

Felipe, thank you as always for your kind words and encouragement. We are please to hear that our efforts to improve are showing but we would welcome suggestions for us to improve even more

WoodChuck Creations - September 8, 2019

Great job guys! I’ve been thinking about building some uppers for my garage, your video gives some great tips!

    Poor Man's DIY - September 8, 2019

Thank you Chuck! We realize there are several issues with the cabinet but we were focused on showing how easily it could be done. Not a lot of time was spent on quality work and the cabinets are so high up that I have to get a ladder to reach some stuff but at least things are put away neatly. 🙂

Nice video. Cabinets look great. : ) Mahalo for sharing.

    Poor Man's DIY - September 8, 2019

ガレージおさるさん Thank you for your kind words as always. It is comments such as yours that make us enjoy what we do even more!

White Lab Workshop - September 8, 2019

Great job! I had one of those “why didn’t I think of that?” moments when you chucked the hook into the drill to screw in the other hook. Sometimes it’s those little things that really make things easier!

    Poor Man's DIY - September 8, 2019

I wont take credit for the idea, as I learned it long ago and it stuck with me. BTW, thank you so very much for taking the time to view our video and leaving a comment. We do appreciate it very much.

XYZ Create - September 9, 2019

I really like the bold color choice! Too often shop furniture is the standard white, black, or natural and it ends up blending in with everything else.

    Poor Man's DIY - September 9, 2019

Thank you , sir! Our entire garage walls are based on the same colors (Fresno State Bulldogs colors) 🙂

Dutch shed woodshop - September 9, 2019

Wow you both made some really nice cabinets! Happy to see your video because i need to make cabinets myself! Thanks

    Poor Man's DIY - September 10, 2019

Thank you very much. We are now expecting you to make cabinets so we can learn the proper way to do it!

Bat City Designs - September 9, 2019

I still love y’alls color pallet on the walls and now on the cabinets. Nice save on the gap.

    Poor Man's DIY - September 10, 2019

Thank you, so very much. We do not like boring colors so we go bold and loud because that is who we are. That being said, I would never use such colors in my rental home.

CCS and Sons Workshop - September 10, 2019

These turned out great! The colors really pop and add a nice artistic look to what can otherwise be pretty boring to look at. Great work.

    Poor Man's DIY - September 10, 2019

If you keep it a secret… we were not going for artistic. I had left over paint and it goes with the abstract lines I painted the garage. Thank you as always for taking the time to watch our video and for leaving such a kind comment

What makes this our home - September 10, 2019

I like the approach you are taking, of teaching people to do this with a variety of tools.

    Poor Man's DIY - September 10, 2019

Thank you so very much for commenting about our approach. That is very special to us!.
